LED TVs

LED TVs, standing for Light Emitting Diode TVs, are a prevalent form of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology, where the LCD panel is illuminated by LEDs placed either behind the screen (in the case of full-array or direct-lit TVs) or around the edges (in edge-lit models). This technology allows for slim designs, energy efficiency, and bright, vibrant images. LED TVs are known for their wide range of sizes, affordability, and versatility, making them suitable for various viewing environments, from dark home theaters to brightly lit living rooms.

FAQs about LED TVs

Edge-lit LED TVs have LEDs positioned around the perimeter of the screen, allowing for very thin panels. Full-array or direct-lit LED TVs have LEDs spread across the entire back panel, providing better uniformity and the ability to adjust brightness in specific zones (local dimming), resulting in improved contrast and deeper blacks.

LED TVs, while offering bright images and energy efficiency, typically cannot match the perfect blacks and infinite contrast ratios of OLED TVs due to their reliance on backlighting. OLEDs provide superior viewing angles and more vibrant colours due to their self-illuminating pixels. However, LED TVs are generally more affordable and less prone to burn-in.

Many LED TVs are suitable for gaming, offering features like low input lag and fast refresh rates. Some models also support gaming-specific features like variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low latency mode (ALLM) to enhance the gaming experience.

LED TVs are particularly well-suited for bright rooms due to their ability to produce high levels of brightness. Models with anti-reflective coatings and higher brightness capabilities are ideal for environments with lots of ambient light.

Key considerations include screen size, which should be chosen based on viewing distance and room size; resolution, with 4K offering more detail than Full HD; HDR capability for improved contrast and colour; smart features for accessing streaming services; and the number and type of connections to accommodate your devices.
